The Festival’s opening concert, presented in partnership with the Poetry Foundation, will feature song cycles that tell stories of wanderers or travelers, and will feature performances of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ cycle of Robert Louis Stephenson’s poems, Songs of Travel and Gustav Mahler’s iconic cycle, Songs of a Wayfarer. This concert will also feature CAIC’s first co-commission of a new work: the Midwestern premiere of a new cycle by composer Missy Mazzoli, Songs from the Operas, which is a collection of excerpts from her operas Breaking the Waves and Proving Up.
