Program
This fascinating Inflection Series event tells two mythical stories, set to music in truly legendary fashion.
First, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano joins tenor Bille Bruley and pianist Benjamin Hochman in a performance of Leos Janáček’s Diary of One Who Disappeared. The deeply moving, mysterious tale of an ill-fated love was said by Janáček to be a reflection of his relationship with his muse. Then Hochman is joined by a true living legend, soprano Lucy Shelton, in a piece that—despite being composed eight years before the Diary—points to a different, more modern musical world: Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. Shelton, a monument of 20th century music, joins Hochman and an instrumental ensemble to conduct our journey, in which we witness a moondrunk Pierrot in a variety of fantastical vignettes before, eventually, he returns home.
